Opportunities For Improving Reproductive Management And Efficiency Of The Swine Breeding Herd With Artificial Insemination
نویسنده
چکیده
Current Status of AI Use The USA swine breeding herd has been reported to include 3.9 million sows. Approximately 60% of these sows were determined to have been mated by artificial insemination. Each sow received 6.5 doses of semen annually, for a total of 25 million doses utilized in a single year (1999, Boar Semen Conference). Most of the AI is performed with 3 billion sperm in 80 cc of a 5-day liquid extender. Both bottles (tubes) and bags are used for storage in single doses at a similar frequency. Although frozen boar semen is currently available, there appears to be some limitations since insemination must occur within 8 h prior to ovulation to achieve results comparable to liquid extended semen for farrowing rates and litter sizes.

Factors for improving reproductive performance of sows and herd productivity in commercial breeding herds
We review critical factors associated with reproductive performance of female breeding pigs, their lifetime performance and herd productivity in commercial herds. The factors include both sow-level and herd-level factors. High risk sow-level groups for decreasing reproductive performance of female pigs are low or high parity, increased outdoor temperature, decreased lactation feed intake, singl...
متن کاملEconomics of fertility in high-yielding dairy cows on confined TMR systems.
The objective of this review paper was to summarise the latest findings in dairy cattle reproductive economics with an emphasis on high yielding, confined total mixed ration systems. The economic gain increases as the reproductive efficiency improves. These increments follow the law of diminishing returns, but are still positive even at high reproductive performance. Reproductive improvement re...
متن کاملMaximizing the Impact of High Value and High Fertility Boars
The use of artificial insemination (AI) in the pig has had a major impact on genetic improvement in the swine industry over the last 40 years. However, the overall production efficiency of the breeding herd is highly dependent on the reproductive capacity of the boars used for breeding and the genetic merit of the boars for the performance of terminal line offspring. Given the widespread use of...
متن کاملAnatomy and Physiology of the Boar
The boar has a tremendous impact on the reproductive efficiency of the swine breeding herd. Depending on the collection frequency and insemination dose, semen from a single boar can be used to breed between 750 and 1000 sows per year. As a result, reproductive failure of a single male influences a large number of sows. Consequently, a thorough understanding of the basic aspects of male reproduc...

Managers of high producing dairy herds have known for some time that optimizing reproductive efficiency is an essential issue in maintaining profitability of a dairy herd. A recent survey by the University of Wisconsin Center for Dairy Profitability asked a random sample of 2,700 dairy producers in Wisconsin to rank the importance of different dairy issues to the future profitability of their b...
